Turning Unused Land Into Productive Revenue
Schaus-Vorhies Manufacturing Case Study
Situated on a former contamination site, the Schaus-Vorhies Manufacturing (SVM) solar field is standout example of putting unused land to productive, revenue-generating use.
As of 2016, the half-megawatt array is the largest privately owned industrial solar installation in Iowa. The $1.2 million project will pay for itself within 5-6 years, and cover 100% of the company’s electrical needs on a net-annual basis.
SVM has a long history of community-oriented and sustainability focused projects with emphasis on achieving LEED construction milestones. The company also gave the use of its land, power, and water for an insulated greenhouse as part of the Iowa Department of Agriculture’s Farm-to-School Program.
Now the company’s restored industrial brownfield has a new purpose as a sustainable, clean energy source.
